Moldovan police receive capacity-strengthening equipment from Canada via IOM Moldova

The General Police Inspectorate has received ten patrol vehicles along with other essential equipment under the “Strengthening National Policing Capacity” project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration with the financial support of Canada.

The donated patrol cars are expected to improve police response to emergencies. The donation also includes 40 body cameras to enhance police accountability and prevent corruption; 40 rugged tablets to strengthen the ability of officers on field duty to access databases in real-time; 5 state-of-the-art smuggling detection kits to enhance cross-border crime detection; and 20 workstations.

Gavin Buchan, Ambassador of Canada to Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, declared that “Canada’s support for Moldova’s democracy, sovereignty, and security is a top priority. This project will help Moldova offer its people a more secure life by enabling the General Police Inspectorate to better respond to the needs of local communities”.

Interior Minister Adrian Efros said the donated equipment will help modernize and make the Moldovan police forces more efficient. “The project is a demonstration of the partnership between our nations and a motivation for new initiatives. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Canada to address the challenges we face and to build a safer and more resilient future through new projects”, said the minister.

“This contribution will help protect the safety, well-being and rights of host communities, migrants, and refugees and will enhance the operational capacity of the state institution while strengthening the community trust in law enforcement institutions”, stated Ester Ruiz de Azua, Chief of Mission IOM Moldova.

Viorel Cernăuțeanu, head of the Moldovan police, noted that the donated equipment will facilitate the efficient work of police officers, their reaction time, integrity and quality documentation during the service.

During the equipment handover event, Ambassador Gavin Buchan was awarded the General Police Inspectorate’s Medal for Cooperation.
