Moldovan migrant women are one of country's best sources of income
The migrant women from Moldova represent one of the best sources of income in the country. They continue to work in the countries of destination even if they do not have social benefits there, Sergiu Sainciuc, the head of the Moldovan delegation to Geneva, said during panel discussions themed
“Women and Migration in Europe and the CIS Countries, including in the Context of Financial Crisis,” Info-Prim Neo reports.
Sergiu Sainciuc said that over 1/3 of the Moldovans who migrated this year were women. Last year, the migrants sent home US$1.8 billion, which is 31% of the GDP.
Speaking about the lack of social benefits for migrants, Sergiu Sainciuc proposed two solutions based on Moldova's experience. One of them concerns the employment policies with emphasis on the employment opportunities for women, while the second – the improvement of the social protection in the countries or origin and in the countries of destination.
The panel discussions formed part of a series of events organized jointly by the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva to celebrate 30 years of the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
