The authorities in northern Romania took new protection measures at the border crossing points in order to avoid the spread of the African swine fever in Botoșani County. All the food products brought by citizens from the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are confiscated and destroyed before the eyes of owners, IPN reports, with reference to Mediafax.

All the motor vehicles that come from Moldova and Ukraine, where cases of African swine fever were confirmed, are examined and the travelers who try to bring food products into the country remain without the meat products, including meat cans and sandwiches, this being destroyed by the authorities at the scene.

According to the vice director of the Botoșani Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Division Ovidiu Airimițoaie, the activity performed by the institution at border crossing points is in accordance with a decision made by the National Committee for Special Emergency Situations that requested to introduce disinfection at the national checkpoints.

“The persons who enter our country are warned not to bring food products. We also distributed leaflets and placed notices at the entrance to frontier posts,” stated the Romanian functionary.

According to the National Food Safety Agency, active hotbeds of African swine fever in Moldova in August still existed in Giurgiulești, Cahul, Comrat and Vulcănești.
