“We’re happy that the new generation will treasure the language at its true value, its beauty and values, the necessity of knowledge, so that the Romanian language will always sit at the top of the table. The new generation doesn’t know of the so-called Moldovan language, a parody name for the Romanian language, a generation that knows no other writing than the Latin one, and this strengthens the hope that Romanian language will win”, university professor Dr. Ion Melniciuc told Info-Prim Neo. “What have we obtained since ’89? I can’t give an unequivocal answer. However, the language is spoken better, more correctly, more literary by intellectuals, professors, writers, journalists, pupils, students, etc. This shouldn’t surprise us, as it was to be expected”, he explained, adding that the level of press’s culture improved and there were newspapers in which one could search for mistakes and find none. “The quality of language also improved in state institutions. 10-15 years ago, in the Parliament and in the Government they spoke differently from now. Although some still don’t know Romanian, to their shame, the language is mostly spoken correctly. It’s good that the top leaders are an example in this regard. These are the successes we obtained and they friends of the Romanian language enjoy them”, said Ion Melniciuc. Speaking about problems, the linguist remarked that the worst thing is that authorities didn’t demand the strict following of literary language norms in all the fields. “We still have shops where you’ll hear no Romanian. They should have enforced a sine qua non condition: if your employees don’t speak the official language, we won’t allow you to open such institution”, stressed Ion Melniciuc. The professor added that the remains of the not too distant past still persist. “Doctors won’t give up the non-Romanian style “Ivan Vasilevici, Ecaterina Petrovna”.
