Moldovan journalists marched trough Chisinau on Thursday, May 8, demanding for the liberalization of the press. The solidarity march, organized as part of the Press Freedom Days, ended in a protest meeting against the censorship imposed by authorities, which lasted for several hours, Info-Prim Neo reports. The director of the Independent Journalism Center (IJC), Corina Cepoi, has said the action is an attempt to make aware the public opinion as to violating the right to information, the violation of the freedom of speech, as to economic, political and social pressures exerted by authorities upon the media disloyal with them. In the opinion of the Moldovan Journalists Union (MJU) president, Valeriu Saharneanu, the condition of the Moldovan press is not changing, but, on the contrary, it dramatically degrades in some respects. Thus, frequent are the attempts of the Communist government to control media, as well as the aggression attempts against journalists, of restricting the access to information, of violating the right to the freedom of speech, of harassing and intimidating the press, the MJU president has said. The protesters have said they are confident they can obtain more freedom for the press, if they stick together. Some journalists opted for the assistance on behalf of international media organizations, which have more influence upon the Chisinau authorities. The solidarity march was organized by the Independent Journalism Center, the Moldovan Journalists Union, the Independent Press Association, the Press Freedom Committee, the APEL Electronic Press Association, the Young Journalist Center, the Investigative Journalism Center, the Acces-Info Center. The event was backed up by the OSCE mission to Moldova, the Global Fund for Preventing Conflicts of the British Government, the Soros Foundation-Moldova, USAID, MCC and AED.
