The National Association of Young Historians of Moldova and Moldova-Institut Leipzig (MIL) are holding an workshop centering on memoirs about the Second World War in Moldova and Romania, the condition of the monuments, cemeteries and museums and the victims of the Holocaust at the Teacher Training University “Ion Creanga” between September 2 and 4. “The interest in the Second World War has increased significantly during the last eight years owing to the political and cultural changes in the European states and certain foreign factors,” Doctor of History Sergiu Musteata, the president of the National Association of Young Historians of Moldova, told a news conference on Wednesday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. “From 2001, attempts have been made in Moldova to reinterpret and rewrite the national history. This fact was mainly determined by Russiaʾs position on this subject,” Musteata said. The participants in the workshop also discuss the situation in Bessarabia and Transnistria during the Second World War, the deportations and the situation of the veterans. ʾThe veterans who fought as part of the Russian Army and the Romanian Army are treated differently and this is not right in a civilized state,” Sergiu Musteata said, adding: “All of them were victims of the regime and the war and must be treated equally. The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, which is regarded differently in the West, Russia, Moldova and Ukraine, is also a topic for discussion. “The attitude towards this document in Moldova is different,” said Doctor of History Igor Casu. “Moldovaʾs Declaration of Independence condemns this document, while the Communist Victor Stepaniuc, in his doctoral dissertation, tries to justify it. The Transnistrian leaders condemn the pact as it dissolved the Moldovan Autonomous Republic and attached Bessarabia to it, forming the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic." The workshop is a component part of a project, whose aim is to analyze and document memoirs about the Second World War, examine monuments, cemeteries, museums, etc.
