The export of honey to the EU is planned to be resumed this summer and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry is hopeful the bird eggs could be exported to the EU markets from 2011, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Agriculture Minister Valeriu Cosarciuc, a group of Italian investors offered to provide financing assistance to bring the Moldovan bird eggs up to the EU standards. First of all, the fowls must be vaccinated against salmonella and the eggs must be marked. “We exported bird eggs to Romania before it became a member of the EU. We are very close to the quality standards imposed by the EU. On the other hand, the EU markets experience shortages of eggs in connection with the modification of the regulations for producers. The daily egg production in Moldova is about 1 million pieces. Nearly 700,000 eggs are needed for domestic consumption so that we could export the rest,” Valeriu Cosarciuc said. Moldova wasn’t able to use the export quota on bird eggs provided by the EU as part of the autonomous trade preferences. The quota was 90,000 eggs in 2008, 96,000 – in 2009, 100,000, 110,000 and 120,000 – in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively.
