Moldovan arrested on charges of human trafficking for sexual exploitation

A number of persons are suspected of human trafficking for sexual exploitation. These include Moldovan and Romanian citizens who recruited young women from Cahul district aged between 19 and 25 for providing sexual services in Romania. One of the Moldovans was arrested by the police, IPN reports.

Most of the girls were from socially deprived families and were persuaded to prostitute themselves by being promised money. The border police arrested an active member of the group while this recruited a young woman by phone. The role of the 23-year-old Moldovan was to recruit girls and hand them over to the Romanian accomplices, who promised them a decent salary in Romania and transported them to Galati, where they were forced to provide sex for money in rented apartments.

The suspects face 7 to 15 years in jail on human trafficking charges.

It should be noted that two Romanian members of the group were arrested by the Romanian authorities and are now held in remand.
