The picturesque places, museums, monasteries and traditional dishes are only some of the touristic attractions from the Moldovan area of the Danube. More than 184,000 foreigners annually cross this area, which includes the districts Cahul, Cantemir and Taraclia and the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauzia. The data were presented by the head of the Association for the Development of Tourism in Moldova Viorel Miron.
In a news conference at IPN, Viorel Miron said the attractions of the Danube area in the ten countries crossed by the river are placed third in the European tourist motivation after the visitation of historical cities and the Mediterranean seaside. In the Moldovan area of the Danube, one can admire the largest European river, the largest natural lakes of the country, one of the biggest protected natural reserves and the richest ethnic and cultural diversity in Moldova.
There are 16 museums in the area and the tourists are served by 26 specialized guides. The visitors enjoy a wide range of services such as individual or group trips, exhibitions, cultural-scientific events, lectures, seminars, etc.
Among the attractions from the area, Viorel Miron mentioned also the fragments of Traian’s Wall, settlements of the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, the ruins of the medieval earth fortress in Giurgiulesti, the Cahul Area Museum or the ethnographic, history and nature museums in Giurgiulesti, Valeni, Slobozia Mare, and Branza as well as the Gagauz ethnographic museums in Besalma and Comrat and the Bulgarian ethnographic museums in Tvardita, Corten, and Taraclia.
