Moldovan ambassador in Italy praises diaspora

Moldova's diaspora in Italy is the largest among EU countries and it's an active community that promotes its country of origin. The statement was made by Stela Stangaci, Moldovan ambassador to Italy, at a talk show on Radio Moldova.

According to her, “the voice of the Moldovan diaspora is well-heard in Italy, where there are several associations of Moldovans. Some of them are registered with Italian authorities and our citizens can solve their problems easier”.

The diplomat notes that the embassy is active in its support for the diaspora, organizing many cultural and artistic events. The embassy in Rome plans to move its office. “We found a building that will allow us to receive our citizens in audience and which has a festivity hall for organizing various diaspora events. We only need the approval from Chisinau”, she said.

The embassy will participate in the organization of parliamentary elections on November 30 so that Moldovan citizens in Italy “will get the chance to vote”. To this goal, the diplomatic mission requested information from the Italian Ministry of the Interior regarding the Italian towns with over 2000 Moldovan residents. “So far, we have a list of 33 towns. Authorities in Chisinau must now decide about the organization of polling stations in these places”, said Stangaci.

The ambassador added that the diplomatic mission is involved in the negotiation of three important agreements between Rome and Chisinau, concerning the recognition of certificates of study, the migration of medical workers and social insurance. “The last agreement is very important because Moldovans who work legally in Italy will be able to receive a pension even if they return to Moldova after retirement”, she explained.
