Moldovan agrifood sector will develop in the next seven years according to a new strategy

The agrifood sector of Moldova will develop in the next seven years according to a new strategy, based on scientific arguments and technological innovations. The Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Agrindustrial Sector covering 2008-2015 was approved by the Government on Wednesday, December 26. The strategy represents a document that outlines the priorities and coordinates the state policies in the field with the aim of adapting the country’s agrindustrial sector to the standards and mechanisms of the market economy. The opinion of the Academy of Sciences, NGOs in the field, trade unions, farmers and international experts was consulted while working out the Strategy. The Agrindustrial Strategy task force has also studied the experience of other EU member countries with the aim of taking over the good practices. Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev said the strategy centres on issues concerning methods of farming agricultural land and of enhancing soil fertility; the possibilities of expanding irrigated areas to a maximal degree by bringing to life the old systems and implementing progressive irrigation methods; stimulating the actions for the revitalization of the refrigeration systems for preserving agrifood products all over the country; stimulating the founding of at least a technological station of specialised farm machines in every district, etc. Premier Tarlev said Moldova’s food security in conditions of limited arable land can be ensured only if agriculture bears an intensive character. The measures to be taken for the implementation of the envisaged objective are included in the Plan of Actions for the strategy implementation.
