Moldova – world champions in Taekwondo
For the first time, the Moldovan Taekwondo team managed to win all three types of medals: gold, silver and bronze at the World Taekwondo Championships, which took place between August 6 and 13 in Ottawa, Canada. All the nine fighters who represented Moldova are members of the Army’s Central Sports Club, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the Ministry of Defense.
Petru Cotoman won the gold medal in 82 kg category of the sparring competition, while Nicolae Gavrilita ranked second in the 70kg category.
In the individual technical section, Nicolae Gavrilita occupied the first place, while Rinat Pulcinschi came second. In the junior’s individual sparring contest, Simion Furdui won the bronze medal.
In team sparring and board breaking (kyok-pa), the Moldovans ranked second. In both disciplines, the Moldovan team faced Argentina in the finals.
The Moldovan team is coached by Iurie Spataru, who headed the delegation, and Corneliu Bulat, who was also a squad member and participated in the veteran category.
The World Taekwondo Championships take place once in two years. The next edition will take place in in 2014, in Sardinia, Italy. This edition gathered 732 sportsmen from 25 countries.
All the representatives of the Moldovan team are medalists of the European Championships that took place in October 2011, in Naples, Italy.
