Moldova willing to negotiate raising export quotas for EU market

Moldova plans to negotiate export quotas for the EU market with the European Union, Economy Minister Igor Dodon has stated. He presented an info note at Thursday's sitting of the government on using the tariff quotas offered to Moldova as part of the autonomous trade preferences (ATP), Info-Prim Neo reports. The ATP regime enacted by the EU for Moldova since March 1, 2008, allows exporting 98% of the Moldovan products to the EU without levying customs duties or with low duties. Tariff contingents are provided for 13 types of products, as the export quotas rise every year. In 2008, the wine quota was fully used (600,000 decaliters) as well as the white sugar quota (15,000 tonnes). The grain exports started in September, as the quotas of corn and barley are used but partially. In 2009, the wine quota of 700,000 decaliters has already been used in ratio of 41%, 45% – the quota of 18,000 tonnes of white sugar, 15 % – the quota of 25,000 tonnes of corn, 34% – the quota of 25,000 tonnes of barley and 98% – the quota of 30,000 tonnes of wheat. The wines mostly went to Poland (46%), Romania (19%), Germany (9%), the Czech Rep. (2%). The sugar is being exported to Romania. The grain is exported to Romania, Italy, Greece, Switzerland. Igor Dodon says it's obvious Moldova will neither use up the quotas offered by the EU in 2009 for exporting animal products, since they do not match the EU requirements. The economy and agriculture ministries are to step up their work attaining the adjustments.
