The Venice Commission reiterated the necessity of obeying the present Constitution and Moldova will take account of these recommendations, regardless of the political interests, Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase told Info-Prim Neo from Strasbourg, where a Moldovan delegation had a meeting with the President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio on May 5. According to Alexandru Tanase, the Moldovan delegation that includes him, Acting President Mihai Ghimpu and MPs Aurel Baiesu and Ion Plesca, familiarized the Venice Commission with the two proposals for overcoming the constitutional crisis discussed in Chisinau – modifying article 78 of the Constitution in Parliament, in accordance with one of the two bills submitted by the PCRM and the AEI that were approved by the Constitutional Court, or holding a referendum. “After a not at all simple discussion, the Venice Commission made a general recommendation, saying that regardless of the existing bills and formulations, the present Constitution should be taken account of,” Alexandru Tanase said. The minister also said that a final decision will be yet taken in Chisinau. “The Venice Commission is an authority in the Council of Europe, whose recommendations are incontestable for any CE member state. Moldova is not an exception,” he said. The constitutional crisis in Moldova was discussed in Strasbourg with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland and the President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Mevlut Cavuşoglu as well. The delegation is set to return to Chisinau today in the afternoon.
