Moldova will sign the Association Agreement with the European Union on June 27, said President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, who is in Moldova on a visit, IPN reports.
“I’m eager to meet Prime Minister Iurie Leanca in Brussels on June 27, when we will sign the Association Agreement by common consent. We will do it together with the other heads of state and government of the EU. This moment will be really important both for Moldova and the EU,” the official said in a news conference after a meeting with Iurie Leanca.
Herman Van Rompuy underlined that Moldova is a European country and all the efforts made by it to implement the European values make the country an important partner of the EU.
He noted that Moldova is a free and sovereign state that can make choices by itself. “We reject any kind of external pressure and support the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova,” said Herman Van Rompuy.
He also said that the resolution of the Transnistrian conflict will become an important step towards strengthening the stability and prosperity in the region. The EU supports the 5+2 format of the talks, but a new framework for settling the dispute must be worked out.
For his part, Iurie Leanca said they took stock of the results achieved by Moldova on the path to European integration and to modernization. “This visit confirms at the highest political level that Moldova is among the external political priorities of the EU. Our future is a European one and we enjoy the EU’s support,” he stated.
Moldova initialed the Association Agreement with the EU at the Vilnius EaP Summit on November 28 last year.
