Moldova will miss important opportunities if the political instability persists. The European Union will not come as a gift. Reforms are needed and there will be both losers and winners in this process. Owing to the political motive, the political leaders in Moldova try to strengthen their own positions before advancing reforms. Even so, the instability can no more last, German independent expert Martin Sieg said in a meeting of the Press Club of the Foreign Policy Association (APE) in Chisinau. “The political elite in Moldova is not united now. The leaders are more concerned about the competition between them than about reforms and there is a serious reason for this – the reforms are costly and necessitate political will,” said Martin Sieg, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The expert considers the ministries are headed by competent persons and Moldova will reach a general consensus about the necessary reforms. “Moreover, the EU hopes that Moldova will become a success story as regards the European integration and thus devotes increased attention to the country, given that things in Ukraine didn’t go very well,” said Martin Sieg. He stressed that if the political instability continues in Moldova, many in the EU will remember Ukraine’s experience and many opportunities will be missed. “Moldova cannot hold elections over and over again. The question arises: If this coalition (the AEI – e.n.) is not functional and cannot concentrate on reforms, then who can and what is the alternative?” said the expert. APE executive director Victor Chirila said for his part that the political instability casts a shadow over the small steps taken during the last two years. But the great accomplishment appreciated by the EU is the fact that there is freedom of expression and the democratic rights are observed in Moldova.
