Moldova will host the European Week of Local Democracy

Between October 13 and 18, Moldova will be hosting a country premiere, the European Week of Local Democracy (EWLD), according to the Ministry of Local Public Administration (MLPA), quoted by Info-Prim Neo. EWLD is a yearly European event, which implies the cooperation of a number of national, local and Council of Europe member countries’ local institutions. EWLD aims to promote the values of local public administration and create additional opportunities for citizens, in order to involve them into activities which would contribute to change the situation inside their communities. A particular attention is paid to youth, with the specific goal of raising, as early as possible, their awareness on democracy and participation in solving local issues. During the week, there are several activities planned to take place in a number of local towns, including information, communication and cooperation actions and an Open Doors Day organized by local public administration, exhibitions on the history and development of the town, publishing informative materials about local public administration’s activities, meetings between the members of the local public administration and the civil society, public debates on local problems. A youth council will also be created, to analyze the relevant problems they deal with. Youngsters will be invited to visit local public institutions and participate to meetings with the representatives of the local administration. As part of the meeting, entitled “Mayor for a day”, high school students will attend debates inside the District council, discussing local issues. The first EWLD has been held on the occasion of the 15th Conference of European Ministers on Local and Regional Governance on October 15 and 16 2007 in Valencia.
