Moldova will get new grant to control TB
Moldova will soon receive a new grant in the amount of 4,594,050 euros to control tuberculosis. The agreement with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was signed late in June, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The grant forms part of the Global Fund’s eighth financing round (for 2009-2014) and is designed to strengthen the control and management of multiresistant TB during the first two years (October 1, 2009 – September 30, 2011).
The money will be used to scale up universal access to the diagnosis and treatment of persons sick with tuberculosis and to improve TB detection and treatment.
The persons suffering from multiresistant tuberculosis have benefited from special advanced treatment as part of the DOTS Plus (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course) Project since December 2005.
Until March 30, 2009, 1,013 persons in Moldova received the DOTS Plus treatment, which was offered with support from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, UNITAID and the Ministry of Health.
The treatment of simple and multiresistant tuberculosis in Moldova is free of charge. About 2,700 persons will receive the DOTS Plus treatment during the next five years
