The Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit is close to its opening. In the event, Moldova is to initial the Association Agreement with the EU and to establish thus preconditions for a decisive political and economic tie with the European area. This is how President Nicolae Timofti began his speech to the people on the public TV channel Moldova 1, given on the occasion of the Eastern Partnership Summit that starts in Vilnius today and ends tomorrow, November 29, IPN reports.
“This event marks a turning point in the destiny of our country and means that we are no longer alone in our aspirations and wish to live better in a civilized and prosperous society. We join an area of peace, safety and prosperity, where the people are united and where the community states help the partners to cope with the most difficult challenges,” said the head of state.
Nicolae Timofti noted the prompt reaction of support of the European Commission when Russia imposed a ban on the imports of Moldovan wine. He said that over the last few years the West helped Moldova a lot, by projects to reform the institutions and infrastructure projects in different areas. “More results of the association with the EU will be seen in time. We hope that next year there will be taken the decision for the Moldovans to travel visa-free in the EU so that we also enjoy one of the basic human rights – to move freely,” he stated.
According to the President, with the assistance of the EU Moldova will manage to reform the institutions, to modernize agriculture and the whole economy and to ensure the respect for the human rights. These accomplishments will benefit all the Moldovans, but the people should be united and believe in the chance of making Moldova a really European country for this to happen.
Nicolae Timofti stressed that the appearance of the Association Agreement with the EU is an achievement of the people. The diplomatic service and the entire Pro-European Coalition only put into practice the society’s wish. The head of state thanked the people for the pro-European choice, underlining that it must be maintained for everyone’s benefit.
In the Vilnius Summit on November 29, Moldova will initial the Association Agreement with the EU. The signing is expected to take place next year.
