The future Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU might provide clear accession prospects if the reforms initiated by the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) are continued after the November 28 legislative elections. Related statements were made by Markus Meckel, a member of the Administration Board of the Moldovan-German Forum, the last Foreign Minister of the German Democratic Republic, one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, and a member of the Bundestag during 20 years, in a meeting with reporters last Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “I will plead for offering Moldova clear admission prospects by this agreement. I think it will not be difficult to do it as you are a small country and the process is easily manageable,” Meckel said, adding the political situation in Europe is now more beneficial to Moldova than several years ago. According to him, the November elections will be decisive for Moldova's future. “It seems to me that the choice is easy – the people must vote either for democracy, a European course, an alliance, regardless of the structure and ratio of forces inside it, or for what already was – for the Communists Party,” Markus Meckel said. “Last year, when I visited Moldova, I saw another country. I remember the discourse themed “Wake-up, Moldova” that I delivered at Jolly Alon Hotel. I don't think that discourse influenced Moldova so much, but anyway I see many changes and a new start for democracy and other transformations. “I realize that the form and structure of the current coalition is not the best. I see the mutual trust between the leaders of the AEI does not increase, but diminish. But I consider a new, similar alliance is crucial for Moldova.” Asked to say how a possible coalition between the Communists Party and the Democratic Party after the elections would influence the relations between Moldova and the EU, the German official said Vladimir Voronin (the leader of the PCRM and former President of Moldova – e.n.) also stated that Moldova would follow the path towards the EU, but it was only a statement. According to him, the AEI also made mistakes, but it started to implement reforms and to make progress on the path to European integration. There is also a kind of emotional attachment. We have high hopes of this country and are afraid they will fade away if a new government comes to power,” he stated. Attending the meeting with the Moldovan reporters, German Ambassador in Chisinau Berthold Johannes said unprecedented support is now offered to Moldova to help it cope with the faced challenges.
