Moldova, Ukraine, Russia consider raising excises on tobacco simultaneously

Moldova, Ukraine and Russia are discussing the possibility of increasing the excise duties on tobacco products. The three countries will coordinate the tax policy in the field and will try to avoid price divergences that favor smuggling, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting Ukrainian media. Ukraine wants the excises to be raised by 100%. This year the duties are expected to be increased by 60%. The Ukrainian press quoted also the adviser of the Moldovan Ministry of Finance Adrian Rusu, who said the smuggling of tobacco products can be reduced only if the three countries take joint steps. He also stated the excises on tobacco in Moldova have increased about four times this year, but avoided saying if a new rise was planned.
