Moldova to receive US$20m to develop agriculture
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will provide a grant of US$20 million to Moldova for developing agriculture and supporting the farmers, the Fund's President Kanayo F. Nwanze told Acting President Mihai Ghimpu during a phone conversation. The assistance comes in response to Mihai Ghimpu's request for aid to stimulate the recovery of the Moldova agriculture, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the Parliament's press service.
According to Kanayo F. Nwanze, Moldova will also benefit from subsidies of aboutUS10 million from European countries for implementing a number of projects in agriculture. A final decision will be taken in the meeting of the IFAD Evaluation Committee early in October.
Kanayo F. Nwanze said he will soon pay a visit to New York, where he and the foreign donors will consider the possibility of providing about US$30 million in financial support to Moldova for agriculture recovery.
Mihai Ghimpu thanked the IFAD President, saying the improvement of the quality of agricultural products and the increase in incomes in rural areas represent essential conditions for economically modernizing Moldova and achieving the European integration objective.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development is the first international institution established exclusively to provide additional resources for agricultural and rural development in developing countries and to channel those resources to the poorest rural populations in Africa, Near East and North Africa, Asia and Latin America. Moldova joined IFAD in 1996. The Fund yearly offers Moldova over USD$450 million as financing for projects and as grants.
