Moldova to present report on EU Free Trade Agreement recommendations in September

Moldova will present at the beginning of September, one month earlier than due, an intermediate progress report on the implementation of European Union's recommendations preceding the launch of negotiations on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement. As Deputy Economy Minister Octavian Calmic told Radio Moldova, our country presents progress reports quarterly, and the next was due in October, but it was decided to release it earlier so that it precedes the Eastern Partnership Summit, to be held in Warsaw later in September. “We have an Action Plan which includes a set of recommendations we received from the EU in November 2010, and now we are working to implement these recommendations. We have several areas acting as performance indicators, which are monitored not only by us, but also by the EU. These include the approval by the Government of two bills – the Draft Law on State Aid and a new Competition Law”, said Deputy Minister Octavian Calmic, who is also Moldova's chief negotiator for the Free Trade Agreement. Another measure to be adopted under the Action Plan is the Food Safety Strategy, which has been recently submitted to the Governmental European Integration Commission. Additionally, on the initiative of the National Bank of Moldova, the Government approved amendments to the banking and financial legislation, which are to be submitted to Parliament for consideration. “If we achieve progress in all these areas, Moldova will certainly receive positive messages at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Warsaw, and this may include the mandate for the launch of negotiations”, stated Octavian Calmic. Brussels gave its go-ahead to the negotiations with Moldova of a Free and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement in June and, as it was announced earlier, talks are expected to start at the end of this year. The Agreement will potentially be part of Moldova's Association Agreement with the EU.
