Moldova to observe Global Election Day
On 7 February 2008, Moldova will mark the Global Election Day during which the Central Election Commission (CEC) will organise a series of activities focusing on the people’s right to elect and be elected, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The main goals of this day are: confirming the belief in the irreversibility of democratic processes; informing the public of new achievements and challenges related to various types of voting systems; calling the attention of parliaments, governments, politicians and world leaders to the important leadership role they play in promoting a culture of democracy and high levels of voter participation; influencing first-time voters and young voters to commit themselves to democratic values.
The Central Election Commission made a publicity spot for civic and electoral education. It also addressed appeals to the human rights nongovernmental organisations encouraging them to observe the Global Election Day and expressing its readiness to provide informative materials and to delegate experts to take part in the activities that will be organised to mark the event.
The initiative to institute a Global Election Day was launched at the Global Election Officials Conference held on September 14 – 17, 2005 in Hungary. Representatives of the election bodies of the world named the first Thursday of February as the Global Election Day because most of the international agreements in the field were signed in the given period of the year.
