Moldova to negotiate new assistance program with IMF

Moldova and the International Monetary Fund will negotiate a new assistance agreement. This was discussed today at a meeting between Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and IMF representatives.

According a press release from the Government, Mission Chief Max Alier said the IMF commends Moldova for the progress of its macroeconomic indicators and is ready to offer assistance to our country as part of a new program centering on three main objectives – fiscal and budget sustainability, maintenance of a prudent monetary policy, and consolidation of the financial sector. The program could span over a timeframe of 15 years.

Max Alier also noted that the impressive economic growth attained in 2013 is due not just to good results in agriculture, but also to adequate economic policies conducted by Moldova since 2009.

In the next two weeks, the IMF's team of experts will have meetings with a number of representatives of Moldovan authorities as well as of the private sector to discuss structural reforms and the steps necessary for securing Moldova's financial stability.
