The Republic of Moldova will adhere to international regulations on substances that deplete the ozone layer. Under a bill that was adopted by Parliament, the state will continue to take measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the purpose, the state will join the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, which was adopted on October 15, 2016, IPN reports.

The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol is an international agreement to gradually reduce the consumption and production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases.  Under the amendment, countries committed to cut the production and consumption of HFCs by more than 80% over the next 30 years. Starting with 2029, Moldova is to cut HFCs by 10% until 2034, by 50% until 2044 and by 80% during the next years.

In Moldova, HFCs are not produced. The whole amount needed for consumption is imported. HFCs are used in such sectors as stationary and mobile air conditioning, commercial and transport refrigeration, foam expansion.

Moldova joined the Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (Vienna, 1985) and the Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer n (Montreal, 1987) in 1996 in a move to support the world community’s efforts to solve the problem of conservation of the ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol is a global agreement to protect the stratospheric ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS).
