Moldova slips 17 spots in FIFA ranking

The national football team of Moldova dropped 17 positions to 65th (500 pts.) in the FIFA/Coca Cola ranking, last updated on Oct. 8, Info-Prim Neo reports. Moldova's rivals in the qualification round for the 2010 World Cup occupy the following positions: Latvia ranks just above Moldova on the 64th spot (501 pts), Israel ranks 16th (961 pts.), Greece ranks 17th (945 pts), Switzerland ranks 45th (641 pts), and Luxembourg ranks 123rd (273 pts). European champions Spain remain unchallenged at the top (1,643 pts) and have even managed to extend their lead over their nearest challengers Italy (1,365 pts) and Germany (1,336 pts). Russia, whose football leagues host the greatest number of Moldovan players, saw its national team climb three spots to 9th, while neighboring Romania dropped 5 positions to 18th. As Moldova coach Igor Dobrovolski has stated earlier, these rankings are not very accurate in valuing a national team and the criteria used are quite subjective. “Any squad can advance in the rankings even if they haven't played any match before that. They should be looking for some other indicators”, he added.
