The R. of Moldova is ranked 114th in what concerns the Human Development Index (HDI), in a ranking including 177 countries. The Human Development Report 2006 (HDR) was presented on Thursday, November 9, in Chisinau, by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Having a HDI equal to 0.694, the R. of Moldova is placed among countries with a medium level of human development, flanked by Uzbekistan (ranked 113) and Bolivia (115). In 2006, the highest-scoring country according to a HDI calculated on the basis of 2004 data, is Norway. The Global Human Development Report for 2006 places Nigeria the lowest (177). In 2005, the Republic of Moldova was ranked 115th. The HDR 2006 attests that RM has a life expectancy of 68.1 (103rd), a 98.4 % adult literacy rate (ranked 19th of 128), a 70.1% combined gross enrolment ratio for primary, secondary and tertiary schools (99th of 172) and a Gross Domestic Product per capita of USD 1,729, at purchasing power parity. On the basis of the Human Development Index, which estimates three essential dimensions – life expectancy, literacy and life standards –UNDP produces, since 1990, a classification included in the Global Human Development Reports, in which countries of the world a re ranked depending of their human development level. The R. of Moldova has been working out, since 1995, its own National Human Development Reports. The National Report 2006 will be presented on November 21.
