A quake measuring 5 degrees on the Richter scale shook Moldova in the morning of October 6. Its epicenter was in the Vrancea Mountains of Romania, where it measured 5.5. The information was communicated to IPN by the head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Chisinau Institute of Geology and Seismology Ion Ilies.
The quake’s center was at a depth of 140 km. Ion Ilies said this earthquake is not connected with the latest quakes that occurred in Galati.
Press Officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service Liliana Puscasu has told the Agency that no damage or telephone calls about sustained damage had been reported by 05.15
A number of earthquakes happened in the Vrancea Mountains in the recent past. In Romania’s capital Bucharest, last night’s quake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale. A series of quake waves were felt in Vrancea yesterday evening.
Two years ago, on October 4, 2011, Moldova was rocked by a 4.3 magnitude-quake that occurred also in the Vrancea Mountains.
