The investments made until now by the European Union in Moldova’s health system amounted to about €16 million and the EU will continue to support the future government of Moldova, press officer of the EU Delegation to Moldova Mindaugas Kacerauskis said in the second National Health Forum, IPN reports.

The European official said the EU considers the aspects related to healthcare a priority. Currently it finances a project to equip the regional medical centers. The EU will also launch the first twinning projector in healthcare, which will provide for experience exchange between the EU member states and Moldova in the area of transplanting. The European Union also continues to offer budgetary support to Moldova for implementing national alcohol and tobacco abuse combating programs.

“We are satisfied with the results achieved until now. In the future, we will lay greater emphasis on the accessibility of heath services. Our efforts must center on bringing the health services closer to the people,” said Mindaugas Kacerauskis.

Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi said that they managed to cover 83% of the population with health policies during a year. Within the process of modifying the management of primary medical institutions, 192 of the 262 national centers switched to direct financing contracts, from the National Health Insurance Company. Over a year, there were repaired and equipped 78 primary health centers. But the rural areas continue to face shortages of family doctors and young specialists.

The representative of the World Health Organization in Moldova Jarno Habicht said the health sector of Moldova saw a number of developments. He congratulated Moldova for improving the financing in healthcare and the access to primary medical services. “We must focus on the problem of doctors who choose to go abroad as their number is higher than of those who graduate from the university of medicine,” he stated.

The National Health Forum has taken place in Chisinau on November 25-26. It brought together several hundred doctors who discuss the problems and accomplishments in the health sector.
