Moldova ratifies ILO Violence and Harassment Convention

The Republic of Moldova will ratify the International Labor Organization Convention on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work, which was adopted in Geneva on June 21, 2019 and entered into force on June 25, 2021. The goal of the document is to ensure a safe working environment free from violence and harassment. The ratification bill was approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, IPN reports.

“The Convention is the first international instrument that sets down specific global standards to combat work-related harassment and violence and that specifies the measures that need to be taken by the state and other relevant players. The ratification and implementation by the Republic of Moldova of the Convention will contribute to the improvement of the legislation in the field by providing clarification and real solutions for employers and employees regarding the measures and processes related to the prevention and combating of violence, harassment at work,” Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu stated in the Cabinet’s meeting.

ILO Convention No. applies to all sectors, whether private or public, both in the formal and informal economy, to all workers, including volunteers, trainees and apprentices, and clearly sets out the role of governments and social partners in preventing, addressing and remedying violence and harassment in the world of work.

The Convention will enter into force for the Republic of Moldova in a year of the submission of the instrument of ratification. Also, the ratification will involve the adoption of normative amendments to align national legislation with the international standards provided by this document.

The bill to ratify the International Labor Organization Convention on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work is to be adopted by Parliament.
