Moldova one of the most corrupt countries - CEROPE

Moldova ranks 47th out of 50 states analysed in terms of perception on corruption, according to a survey published by the Romanian Centre for Economic Policies (CEROPE). The worst ranking countries after Moldova are Argentina, Ukraine and Russia. Moldova came behind Romania, which placed 46th on the list. The perception on corruption as a phenomenon is a synthetic index estimated by Transparency International, on the basis of enquires and opinion polls. Best ranking were Finland and New Zeeland. Of the former communist states, the best ranking are Estonia and Slovenia, followed by Hungary and Bulgaria. The majority of the well developed European states find themselves among the top 20. Central and East European countries are situated solidly between the 30th and the 45th places. The US-based Gallup polling organisation placed Moldova the 88th out of 101 countries analysed in terms of perception on corruption within governmental institutions. To draw a comparison, the "Transparency International-Moldova" report published in 2006 places Moldova the 81st out of 163 countries included in a ranking on corruption perception in the public sector.
