Moldova – one of main suppliers of migrants to Romania

Moldova, along with Turkey and China, is one of the main countries that supply Romania with migrants. These are the findings of the study entitled “Immigration and Asylum in Romania - 2006”, conducted by the inter-ministerial Group for coordination of the National Strategy for Migration. The conclusions referring to the impact of immigration on Romania reveal that in 2006 foreigners kept a high level of interest in coming to Romania for visiting purposes (I place), doing business (II) and travelling (III). The number of applications for short-stay visas (in particular, submitted by foreign citizens coming from countries with migration trends) and for long-stay visas increased significantly. It is also found a significant increase in the number of foreign citizens that got married to Romanians, who, for this reason, have temporarily resided in Romania, 17% of the total number. Moldova accounts for 18.1% of the total number of foreign citizens in Romania that are married to Romanians, after Syrians - 42.3%, Lebanon citizens - 28.9%, Turks – 23.9%; Ukrainians - 20.5%. The number of foreign citizens who applied for a long-stay visa for the purpose of employment in Romania considerably rose last year (+27%), as well as the number of foreigners who were given the right to stay temporarily for the same purpose (+57%), which shows that Romania’s transformation from a transit state into a migrant-receiving country is irreversible. On the whole, the number of foreigners staying in Romania at present represents only 0.2% of the total population. Of the number of Romania’s active population (about 9.7 mln), employed foreigners represents just 0.58%, a fact that has no negative implications for the workforce market.
