Moldova must profit from the assistance that Ukraine could provide in resolving the Transnistrian dispute now that the neighboring country changed its attitude to the given issue. Such statements were made in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Political analyst Roman Mihaes considers that following the war in its eastern part, Ukraine became an ally of Moldova. “Poroshenko realized that the Ukrainian authorities made a big mistake in 1992, when they adopted a tacit pro-Transnistria attitude and tacitly supported the separatist regime in the period. The Russian-Ukrainian war changed the situation. Moldova should profit from this support of Kiev so as to settle the Transnistrian conflict,” stated the analyst.

Nicolae Afanas, chair at the Institute of International Relations of Moldova, believes Ukraine represents a chance as well as a brake for Moldova in the European integration process. “All the EU policies on Moldova are similar to those on Ukraine. The EU regards the European integration of Moldova in the same way as the European integration of Ukraine. The situation in eastern Ukraine could hamper this process both for Moldova and for Ukraine. Ukraine always treated Moldova from the position of a bigger state. Anyway, Moldova must profit from Kiev’s position and the created situation so as to reunify its territory,” he said.

Alexandru Cauia, dean of the Faculty of Law of the Moldova Free International University, considers that this attitude of Kyiv on Transnistria will not last long. “Despite the difficulties it faces, Ukraine will not renounce Crimea and, even if it may seem strange, it can have territorial claims on Transnistria. Even if it considers Moldova an ally, it can swiftly change its position and claim Transnistria. That’s why Chisinau should make use of the current situation,” he stated.
