Moldova may be favored by EU, analyst

[Info-Prim Neo article from the series “2011: how it was and how it wasn’t”] {“Moldova closer to the EU?”, in the opinion of Mihai Cernencu, political analyst} The ruling alliance called the Alliance for European Integration should normally do great and goods things as regards the European integration. But a less predictable factor for such a situation appeared. For half a year, the EU has been itself affected by the debts problem of Greece, Spain, Portugal and now Italy. However, these troubles should not have a negative impact on Moldova’s European integrator course, said political analyst Mihai Cernencu. According to him, the roadmap for visa liberalization should have been implemented fully, not only partially. Moldova’s success story mentioned in the Eastern Partnership Summit was overshadowed or at least neutralized by the disagreements inside the AEI. “These rows are in a way justified. There are three parties that have their own views and group interests in Moldova’s economy. This is rather evident,” said the analyst. One of the main objectives that Moldova must achieve is to adopt pieces of legislation, including the Antidiscrimination Law that was withdrawn by the Government. It must also reform the justice sector and the local public administration. The reform strategies for these sectors were adopted conceptually. Mihai Cernencu said not only Moldova hasn’t implemented the Plan of Action with the EU. “Everyone knows what happened to Ukraine. Nobody expected that Iulia Timoshenko would be arrested. This fact made the European Commission turn down Ukraine’s invitation to sign the Association Agreement,” he said. He also said that the maneuvers of the PCRM, which started to look at the East, namely at the Eurasian community, are aimed at obtaining power and seats. This party is not concerned about Moldova’s problems and prospects. The Eurasian Union, which aims to restore the former Soviet Empire, has not yet asserted itself. The European Union has existed for over 60 years and improved its structure since April 1951, when it was founded,” said Mihai Cernencu. ”A very important thing should be mentioned here. On December 5, the European Commission launched the talks on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with Moldova. It is a very positive thing, but it can be clouded again by the non-election of the head of state or early legislative elections. The European prospect depends on the handling of the revenge of the Communist Party, which can no longer steal as earlier and feels bad in the opposition,” said Mihai Cernencu. He stressed that the arguments inside the AEI are aimed at finding a balance in society. At least some of the member parties of the AEI tried to temper the wish of some ‘sharks’ to continue monopolizing Moldova and transforming it into a small African banana. ”Moldova may be favored by the EU as Belarus is far from the integration into the EU, as Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, the EU may lose patience if the arguments go on and if early elections are held,” said the analyst. In the end, Mihai Cernencu said the Europeans are no more impressed by the knowledge of English and a perfect discourse. They want to know when the prosecutors will not be corrupt, when justice will solve the problems and the judges who caused damage of millions to Moldova’s budget will be dismissed.
