Moldova marked by instability, progress and elections, Dirk Schuebel

Moldova has been marked by long-term political instability, but nevertheless made progress, said the Head of the EU Delegation to Chisinau Dirk Schuebel, approving of the Moldova country report on the results achieved in 2010, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Despite the long-term political crisis that practically started when the Alliance for European Integration was formed, there was made progress. That’s why I wouldn’t agree with the voices that say the Government of Moldova is not operable or the Alliance is not operable. It exists, it functions, but in order to have all the bodies built, a head of state should be elected. In fact, the Constitution of Moldova stipulates the same thing. Therefore, it is now the task of the politicians to decide, to reach a compromise, a solution to this eternal problem. We, from the outside, can only provide limited support and advice to help overcome this situation,” said the European official. Asked what can happen if the situation is not overcome this time again, Dirk Schuebel made reference to the stipulations of the Constitution. “The Constitution stipulates a certain procedure, certain legal steps that must be taken in this case and if I’m not wrong, there will be early elections. It is the Constitutional Court and the politicians to decide what steps will be taken. But I think the fact that the citizens were sent to the polling booths five times during 22 months means that they no more need elections. I think they need economic and political stability. That’s why the politicians must overcome this problem, these subjective opinions and find a solution so as to avoid early elections,” said the Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel.
