The Republic of Moldova will lose $22 million in financial support after the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, announced the cancellation of a $486 million fund intended for the "Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening ", which also includes Moldova. The decision was communicated through a post on X, radiomoldova.md reported, quoted by IPN.
The funds were designed to support an "inclusive and participatory political process" in the Republic of Moldova.
Recently, billionaire Elon Musk, appointed by the new U.S. President Donald Trump to head the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), said that the US could go "bankrupt" without budget cuts, given the US$2 trillion deficit.
Critics warned that the actions of Musk and DOGE could lead to "a constitutional crisis," overstepping the traditional authority of government employees and raising questions about conflicts of interest, with Musk's firms themselves having government contractors. There are also concerns that efforts to slash spending could negatively affect essential programs and lead to abuses of power.
