Moldova lose 1-0 to world vice champion
Moldova’s national football squad was beaten 1-0 by the Dutch team in a match of the EURO 2012 qualifiers, Info-Prim Neo reports. Despite ticket-related problems, the match played on the Zimbru Stadium in Chisinau on October 8 gathered about 11,000 spectators.
The Netherlands dominated throughout the game, with Moldova taking up a defensive position. Dutch attacker Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored the only goal of the match in the 37th minute. In the second half, Dutch players Rafael Van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder, John Heitinga and Huntelaar were close to scoring goals. Moldova did not manage to tie and left home with three points.
In the 79th minute, a supporter managed to enter the field even if there were about 600 police officers guarding. He was taken away immediately.
In a new conference, the Netherlands manager Bert van Marwijk said he was satisfied with the result. “We dominated 90% of the game. We should have scored several goals more so as to be calm at the end of the game,” he said.
Moldova manager Gabi Balint admitted that the opponents were clearly superior. “However, we could show a better play. I don’t understand what’s happened in the first half. The Moldovan players looked scared. They played better in the second half, but did not have occasions to score,” he said.
In another match of preliminary Group E, Hungary demolished San Marino 8-0. The rankings are headed by the Netherlands with nine points. Sweden and Hungary come next with six points. Moldova remained on the fourth place with three points, with Finland and San Marino closing the list.
The next encounters will take place on October 12. Moldova will play abroad San Marino, Finland will meet Hungary, while the Netherlands will face Sweden.
