Moldova likely to hold constitutional referendum September 5

The constitutional referendum on the way of electing the head of state will be conducted on September 5, the governing Alliance for European Integration (AEI) announced on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The constitutional referendum will take place on September 5, if the Constitutional Court issues its expertize brief on July 6. Only then will we consider the dissolution of Parliament”, declared Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu. Dumitru Diacov, the honorary president of the Democratic Party, said there were no divergences within the Alliance concerning issues related to the referendum and the early elections. Moldova Noastra leader Serafim Urecheanu said the referendum could take place either on September 5 or the following Sunday. A definitive decision will be announced after the brief of the Constitutional Court is issued. The AEI initiated the upcoming constitutional referendum in a bid to introduce direct popular vote for the president, who is now elected by Parliament.
