Moldova, Latvia sign memorandum of cooperation in probation

The Republic of Moldova and Larva signed a memorandum of cooperation in the area of probation. The Ministry of Justice said the signed document envisions the development of a cooperation mechanism in supervising persons in the two probation systems. The memorandum was signed during Deputy Minister of Justice Anatolie Munteanu’s visit to Riga, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Ministry of Justice says the main directions agreed by Moldova and Latvia include the harmonization of the national legislation in the field with the European one, mutual assistance in facilitating the continuous professional development of probation advisers, exchange of experience in the area of detention, rehabilitation of persons and more intense cooperation in the judicial examination process.

Anatolie Munteanu had meetings with the Latvian Minister of Justice Dzintars Rasnačs and Secretary of State of the Ministry of Justice Raivis Cronbergs. “In the meetings, we agreed to continue to develop the cooperation, especially as regards electronic tagging and quality of pre-trial reports. We will implement together the highest standards in case of detention of persons, with emphasis on re-socialization programs. We will stage short-term internships and will exchange investigation methods. The Latvian colleagues accepted the invitation to visit us in Chisinau to more thoroughly discuss the prospects of our bilateral cooperation,” stated Anatolie Munteanu.

The representatives of the two states discussed and agreed measures for strengthening international cooperation in the area of probation, which is the most efficient alternative detention method.
