Moldova Journalists Union urges media NGOs to join “Stand Up for Journalism” manifestations
Monday, November 5 is “Stand Up for Journalism day” in Europe. On the occasion, Moldova Journalists Union calls on media NGOs to show solidarity with journalists and raise public awareness of the serious problems affecting the society and the media.
According to the organisation, the problems of the Moldovan mass media institutions relate to the lack of a national development strategy of the free press, the political control and pressure, the severe situation of the independent press, illegal privatisation of public institutions, persecution of journalists, limited access to information, lack of transparency in state institutions, journalists’ political obedience in detriment to deontological principles, compromising of the professional standards by pro-governmental mass media, which were transformed into tools for propaganda and personal attacks.
Journalists from Moldova cannot watch with indifference the instances of antidemocratic behaviour of the government, because freedom of press is an indispensable condition of development in the European democratic space, the Union’s statement says.
European journalists will organise events to promote journalists’ rights. Locally, manifestations will highlight issues of major concern for journalists: better working conditions, decent wages, guaranteed rights and the reduction of the cuts operated by media companies in order to increase profits.
