Moldova joins CoE Convention on Laundering

The Parliament ratified on Friday, July 13 the Council of Europe Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime and on the Financing of Terrorism adopted in Warsaw on May 16, 2005. The text of the document outlines that the fast access to financial information or any information on the goods held by a criminal organization, including terrorist groups, is the key to the success of preventive and repressive measures, and finally, the best way to top these phenomena. At the same time, the document includes a mechanism which ensures the proper implementation of its provisions by the Parties. The Convention is separated into 7 chapters and aims at undertaking actions to prevent and fight laundering and financing of terrorism, easing and supporting the international cooperation and technical assistance in this field. In order to implement the provisions of the Convention, the states are obliged to provide mutual legal assistance and to undertake the necessary measures for the seizure and confiscation of the proceeds from crime. This Convention is the first international treaty which includes provisions both on the prevention and control of laundering and financing of terrorism.
