Moldova is 'catastrophically un-theatrical'

Moldova is a catastrophically un-theatrical country: there is no money for costumes and settings, let aside wages; theaters barely survive, with minimal wages or even unpaid actors and low-budget shows, stated director Sandu Grecu at Viata Publica show on Radio Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. “When I hear about reforms in theater without money, reforms for the mere sake of reforms, I get the feeling we’re either amateurs or villains, as if we want to destroy everything in Moldova”, said Sandu Grecu, who is also the head of the Theater Union of Moldova. The director says there are good actors and directors in Moldova, but money is needed for wages and production. “A play funded with 36,000 lei isn’t enough to buy footwear for 10 actors. I don’t even speak about costumes, choreography, setting and other expenses. A show costs about 150,000-200,000 lei. This is the simplest staging of a play. Better wages attract better actors”, stressed Sandu Grecu. He thinks that people don’t attend theaters because they lack the necessary culture or don’t even know what it is about. “We need theaters in every district, in Cahul, Balti, Soroca and Causeni. We must educate the people for theater. We must think about theater tours through the country”. He estimated the cost of a tour outside Chisinau at a minimum of 2000 lei, plus the rent of the room. “When you go there, you encounter a culture house whose director doesn’t guarantee any audience and demands money for rent and you lose another 1000 lei”, explained the director. Improving the quality of theaters requires money, otherwise actors will leave abroad or find another job, quitting acting, concluded Grecu.
