Moldova is back among medal winners at Rio Olympics

Moldova is back among the medal winners at the Olympic Games in Rio. Two days ago, Moldova was deprived of its bronze medal in the 1000m canoe sprint race after Ukrainian-born Serghei Tarnovschi tested positive for doping. The reasons why Moldova is back in the medal charts have not been announced. In an earlier press release, the National Olympic Committee suggested there was some kind of mistake about the athlete’s anti-doping test, which he took in July, IPN reports.

The National Olympic Committee denounced a series of procedural violations about the canoeist’s provisional suspension. As part of an internal inquiry, everyone involved was interviewed, including the athletes, the coach and the team doctor. However, they aren’t familiar with the medication allegedly used by the canoeist and the athletes have never used it.

According to the latest Olympic rankings, Moldova is 75th with one bronze medal. Our neighbors, Ukraine and Romania are 25th and 45th, with 8 and 4 medals respectively. The chart is topped by the USA, with 105 medals, followed by the Great Britain, with 65. China has the same number of medals, but fewer gold ones than the British and is thus ranked 3rd.
