The procedure for initialing the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union was finished. The last initials were put by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on November 29.
Immediately after the initialing, the Moldovan Premier said that we live a historical moment as there was initialed an unprecedented large-scale and ambitious accord. It symbolizes the confidence, openness and cooperation between Moldova and the EU.
“Moldova, we today secured our road to European Union,” Iurie Leanca said in the end in Romanian, IPN’s correspondent reports.
In the preamble of the Association Agreement with the EU, Moldova is recognized as a European country with a history and values common with those of the EU. The European Union welcomes the county’s choice, including the commitment to develop sustainable democracy and a market economy. The political association and economic integration of Moldova into the EU will depend on the progress made in implementing the Association Agreement and on the results achieved by Moldova in ensuring the respect for the common values and progress in convergence with the political, economic and legal sectors of the EU.
The text of the Association Agreement will be made public next week, said Deputy Prime Minister Natalia Gherman.
In the Vilnius EaP Summit, Georgia also initialed the Association Agreement with the EU, while Azerbaijan signed a visa regime facilitation agreement.
