EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle said that Moldova has all the chances to obtain a liberalized visa regime with the EU. If the report of the mission that will come to Chisinau in the middle of October is positive, the European Commission will recommend the European Parliament to eliminate the visas. The offices made the statements in a news conference in Chisinau, after a meeting with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, IPN reports.
“It is very important that this mission that will arrive in the middle of the month should reach positive conclusion and ascertain significant progress so that the report points to very clear results. The messages are very simple – maintaining of political stability, fulfillment of the commitments as regards the reforms under implementation, in the hope that these reforms will contribute to the improvement of the living conditions,” said the European commissioner.
“If very good work is indeed done, if all the commitments are met, I do not image an EU member states creating artificial barriers on a so important decision,” said the official.
After the meeting with the head of state, Štefan Füle underlined that the reforms in justice and the combating of corruption represent the main test for the Moldovan authorities in the process of adjustment to the community standards. “We do not want to hear only statements of intentions. The reforms must produce results. Moldova’s future cannot be left to the discretion of functionaries that defy the law,” stated the commissioner.
For their part, the Moldovan officials assured that Moldova made the choice to become a European country in 2009 already. “We have time to convince the people that this choice is the correct one and it will bring better living conditions,” said Prime Minister Iurie Leanca.
Štefan Füle will take part in the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum that is taking place in Chisinau. The commissioner underlined the importance of promoting the people’s civic activism as an element of strengthening democracy.
