Moldova focuses on low emission capacity building

The greenhouse gas emissions in the Republic of Moldova are much lower than in other countries. Even so, the authorities aim to take measures to reduce gas emissions in partnership with the international community. Alongside another ten states, Moldova benefited from support within the second phase of the Low Emission Capacity Building Program that is supported by the European Union, IPN reports.

In the project review event, manager of the Climate Change Office Vasile Scorpan said the greenhouse gas emissions in Moldova represent 0.035% of the global emissions. But this does not mean that Moldova should not take measures to reduce these emissions given that the development processes continue, while forecasts show the emissions will grow.

Within the project, about 150 national experts learned how to determine gas emissions. There were printed several methodological guidebooks that are to be used in the future.

Project manager Sergiu Ungureanu said there were launched four national greenhouse gas emission reduction project proposals. One of these aims to extend the wooded areas. Currently, the wooded areas in Moldova represent 10% at a time when the European norm is 25%. Another project refers to the replacement of incandescent lamps with energy efficient LEDs in homes and social institutions.

The third project concerns cogeneration and envisions the construction of thermoelectric systems that would produce electricity and heat at the local level to supply the community. Such units would be built in each district center. The last project suggests treating solid waste by applying separate processing technology so that this becomes a source of benefit.

According to Sergiu Ungureanu, if the four projects get external financing and are implemented, the current emissions will be reduced by 18%. The projects were registered in an international registry NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action) and are to be fully or partially accepted. Financing per project was estimated at €50-100 million.
