Moldova fails to make significant progress in fighting corruption in 2008 compared to last year: special representative of CoE secretary general
Vladimir Ristovski, the special representative of the secretary general of the Council of Europe (CoE) to Moldova, Tuesday stated at the National Anti-Corruption Conference that Moldova has failed to make significant progress in fighting and preventing corruption, compared to last year, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Ristovski has said however some progress has been made. He has mentioned several laws adopted by the Parliament: the Law on political parties, the Law on conflicts of interest and the Law on preventing and fighting corruption. “These concrete results cannot be ignored,” Ristovski said.
“The legal frame is not perfect yet, but good enough. The next step should be its correct enforcement. The improvement of the legal frame should render better feelings to the people, what should get mirrored in the corruption perception index,” said the special representative of the CoE's secretary general.
According to Ristovski, efforts must be made to gain functional efficiency of laws. New institutions must be created, too, as ethics commission. It's also necessary to obtain synergy among the multiple institutions fighting corruption, Vladimir Ristovski said.
The 4th Anti-Corruption National Commission takes place from December 9 to 10 in Chisinau, and is titled: “Progress and Perspectives in Preventing Corruption”. The conference is organized by the Economic Crime and Corruption Combating Center, with the support of the common Project against corruption, money laundering and financing terrorism in Moldova, co-financed by the European Commission, CoE and the Swedish International Development Agency.
