Exports of Moldovan wine to EU countries like Romania and Poland increased by 50% since January until September, while exports to China doubled. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov told reporters on Tuesday that in the first 9 months Moldova’s wine exports reached $100 million, which is 21% more than the previous year, Info-Prim Neo reports. Vasile Bumacov highlighted that Russia imported 48% more Moldovan wine than last year. Currently, negotiations underway to open a new import processing terminal in Bryansk. “We had meetings with the Russian authorities and more visits are planned. The import point will be opened soon”, said the Minister. Vasile Bumacov said that 2,500 ha of vineyards have been planted this year, 500 ha more than last year. The nurseries will produce about 4.5 million grafted vines. At the same time, total grape production decreased by 60,000 tonnes to 540,000 tonnes. 60,000 of these are table grapes. Moldova will export almost half of its table grapes harvest. Vasile Bumacov said negotiations were started with 90 vine growers who want to modernize the vineyard sector and they would benefit from a project with financing of €75 million. In another development, Bumacov says he is angry that in some restaurants a bottle of Moldovan wine may cost up to 800 lei. He wants a solution to regulate the prices of wine so as to put an end to markups of 400%, which, according to him, scare all the tourists away.
