The European Union is built on clear and transparent rules and on democratic values, while the Republic of Moldova tends to this, President Nicolae Timofti and Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau Pirkka Tapiola said in the opening of the European Town. The Head of State noted that Moldova deserves to be present in the big European family, IPN reports.
Nicolae Timofti said there is now a holiday atmosphere in the Public Garden “Stephan the Great and Holy”, where events are staged to celebrate the establishment of the European Union 66 years ago. “The united Europe became a fortress of democracy. But the challenges didn’t bypass Europe of the 21st century. Thus, the old continent faces one of the most serious crises – the migrant crisis – and also a security crisis. But I’m sure that solutions will be found to overcome these challenges. We were near those who were affected by the bloody terrorist attacks,” he stated.
The President remarked that the day the Moldova – EU Association Agreement was signed will remain in the country’s history. The free movement of the Moldovan people is one more victory added to the country’s European agenda and is an encouraging political message from the European partners. “Our European path is irreversible. We need politicians with will who will root out corruption. We count on the European partners’ assistance in advancing reforms,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
Pirkka Tapiola said that those who founded the EU saw the integration as the best solution for ensuring peace on the continent and they were right. “The European project not only made another war unconceivable, but also became the most successful peaceful project in the world. The relationship between the EU and the Republic of Moldova is probably the most powerful and ambitious among all the relations we have with our partners. This is out common success. The Republic of Moldova is very close to the European family and, as in any other family, our relations are based on common values, mutual trust and honest dialog,” stated the ambassador.
The EU’s motto is “Unity through Diversity!” and the diplomat believes that these words represent the Republic of Moldova too. He said he noticed in time that people who speak different languages and who have different cultures and religious can leave in peace here. This is the essence of a European nation. The people in the Republic of Moldova can see in the EU how the respecting of the rules of the game makes the obtaining of success possible.
“The EU is built on clear and transparent rules, as our relationship with Moldova is. The Association Agreement offers a framework for developing our political partnership with the common goal of reforming the country. The reforms that the EU supports are aimed at offering the people the opportunity of living in a country with norms and rules that are equal for everyone. With the Free Trade Area, you gained access to the richest market of the world, which offers the economy the possibility of growing and a chance for the people’s lives to become better,” said Pirkka Tapiola.
The visitors of the European Town inaugurated in the central park of Chisinau on May 14 can take part in foreign language lessons, can eat European food and can listen to music. They can also find out more about the European projects implemented in Moldova. During the next few days, there will be shown films and staged other activities on the European theme.
